Are Presynaptic Proteins Predisposed to Self-Assemble?
Tight control of synapse formation ensures that neurons connect to appropriate targets. In this issue of Neuron, Klassen et al. identify ARL-8 GTPase as a regulator of presynaptic assembly. Without ARL-8, presynaptic material aggregates en route to its destination, suggesting that ARL-8 acts like a dispersant to prevent premature synaptic assembly in the axon.
متن کاملBacterial proteins predisposed for targeting to mitochondria.
Mitochondria evolved from an endosymbiotic proteobacterium in a process that required the transfer of genes from the bacterium to the host cell nucleus, and the translocation of proteins thereby made in the host cell cytosol into the internal compartments of the organelle. According to current models for this evolution, two highly improbable events are required to occur simultaneously: creation...
متن کاملDishevelled Proteins Are Associated with Olfactory Sensory Neuron Presynaptic Terminals
Olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) project their axons from the olfactory epithelium toward the olfactory bulb (OB) in a heterogeneous and unsorted arrangement. However, as the axons approach the glomerular layer of the OB, axons from OSNs expressing the same odorant receptor (OR) sort and converge to form molecularly homogeneous glomeruli. Axon guidance cues, cell adhesion molecules, and OR indu...
متن کاملAre elite endurance athletes genetically predisposed to lower disease risk?
We compared a polygenic profile that combined 33 disease risk-related mutations and polymorphisms among nonathletic healthy control subjects and elite endurance athletes. The study sample comprised 100 healthy Spanish male nonathletic (sedentary) control subjects and 100 male elite endurance athletes. We analyzed 33 disease risk-related mutations and polymorphisms. We computed a health-related ...
متن کاملWhy are women predisposed to autoimmune rheumatic diseases?
The majority of autoimmune diseases predominate in females. In searching for an explanation for this female excess, most attention has focused on hormonal changes--both exogenous changes (for example, oral contraceptive pill) and fluctuations in endogenous hormone levels particularly related to menstruation and pregnancy history. Other reasons include genetic differences, both direct (influence...
